Tourmaline belongs to the complex family of aluminum boron silicates and is valued for both its unique aesthetic appeal and its powerful metaphysical properties. The name tourmaline comes from an ancient Sinhala word tourmaline (or turamali), meaning a mixed-color gem or something small from the earth. The most popular type of tourmaline is Schorl, a black or dark blue crystal that was used as early as the 1400s, and whose name comes from the Saxon town of Schorl, which had nearby tin mines.
