Tourmaline belongs to a complex family of aluminum boron silicates, in which impurities of iron, magnesium or other metals determine the color of the crystal. Its color palette is very diverse - it can be red, pink, yellow, brown, black, green, blue or violet. The name tourmaline comes from an ancient Sinhalese word tourmaline, meaning a mixed-color gemstone, or turamali – something small from the ground.
The most popular and best-known type of tourmaline is Schorl, a black and sometimes dark blue crystal that has been used since before 1400. The name is attributed to the town in Saxony, Germany, in the nearby tin mines where black tourmaline was found.
